   ADVANCEMENT BASICS

The first badge all Cub Scouts earn, regardless of age, is the Bobcat Badge.  This badge requires the Scout to learn the basic information about Cub Scouting that all Cub Scouts must learn.  After earning the Bobcat Badge, the Scout proceeds to work on advancement specific to his age and school grade level.

Cub Scouts joining as 1st grade boys enter as Tiger Cubs.  The Tiger Cub program introduces boys to the excitement of Cub Scouting as they "Search, Discover, and Share" together.  They complete Achievements to earn the Tiger Cub Badge, and they may complete Electives to receive Tiger Track Beads.

Second grade boys enter Cub Scouts as Wolf Cubs, where they must complete 12  Achievements involving simple physical and mental skills to earn the Wolf Badge.  They may also work on Electives tasks to receive a Gold Arrow Point and one or more Silver Arrow Points.

Third grade boys enter Cub Scouts as Bear Cubs.  They must complete 12 out of 24 Achievements in four different categories to earn the Bear Badge.  These requirements are somewhat more difficult and challenging than those for Wolf rank.  They may also work on Electives tasks to receive a Gold Arrow Point and one or more Silver Arrow Points.

The Webelos Program is a two year program for 4th and 5th grade boys.  In both years, they work toward earning Webelos Activity Badges in twenty different areas, organized into five groups.  Fourth grade boys work toward the Webelos Badge.  Fifth graders, after earning the Webelos Badge, earn the Arrow of Light - Cub Scouting's highest award.  In addition to the two rank badges, after earning the Webelos Badge, boys work toward the Compass Point Emblem and Metal Compass Points as they earn additional Activity Badges.
